Men’s Golf Update

This Wednesday is the first round of the ever-popular Handiskins. Your best three rounds from the five rounds played 21 January to 18 February count towards earning a place in the final four. There is a $40 entry fee and full details of the competition can be found at https://www.handiskins.com.au/how-it-works/handiskins-at-a-glance/
On Saturday 24 January we will be holding a fundraiser to assist Shay & his family with the costs associated with an incredibly busy January/February as he continues representing our Club in major tournaments around the country. We will be running a 100 Club, with tickets on sale outside the Pro Shop from 10:30am to 1:30pm. Already Shay has played the ACT week of Golf where he finished in the top 10 with 2 under par for four rounds – highlighted by a magnificent 7 under 65 final round. Then he was straight across to South Australia for their Junior Championships, where he had the early lead with a 4 under par 68. Unfortunately, one bad nine hole stretch in the wind did a lot of damage but he rallied in 15th position. Two days later he was in the South Australian Junior Masters, in a field where every player had a plus handicap! It was a slower start, but he improved every round, and only three players had a lower score in the final round as he finished one shot out of the top ten. His performances so far have him ranked #8 in the Australian Boys Order of Merit. Now he moves onto Open Men’s events with the Avondale Medal commencing Tuesday, the NSW Amateur a week later, the Australian Amateur Championship in Perth the week after that and the Concord Medal in mid-February. And on any free Sundays he will be representing Avondale in the Sydney Division 1 Men’s Pennants. The Men’s Golf Committee assists with entry fees for all of those tournaments, but as you can see there are a lot of travel and accommodation expenses that are part of taking the opportunity to test his skills at the highest level. So even if you aren’t playing on Saturday please drop in to add your support.
Our local Pennants season has commenced and after two rounds our A grade remains undefeated. A clean sweep 6-0 win over Mangrove in the first round followed by a 3-3 tie with the very strong Wyong Club on Sunday – at a very windy and occasionally rainy Magenta. B Grade have found things a little tougher going down 1.5 – 2.5 in round one, and 1-3 in the second round. Similar for C graders who have lost 1.5-2.5 and 0-4. Still lots of golf to be played and we are confident the lower grades will start getting wins on the board to match the good work of the As.
The rain over the weekend also had a big effect on the course, we had 225mm in the gauge, which meant all bunkers became ponds. Chris & the team are working hard and hope to have them all repaired by Wednesday. Also, lots of branches down and general damage on the course to be repaired. Please make sure you do your bit to keep the course in as good as condition as possible after they have finished their work; repair divots, fix pitch marks and rake bunkers. It should be automatic to do those things, it is an easy habit to get into and you & your fellow members will appreciate having the course as good as possible at all times.
Those playing competitions would be aware that we are usually close to capacity, so we need all players to be aware of their group’s pace of play. Please maintain your position directly behind the group ahead of you. If you do fall behind after looking for a lost ball, please speed up your play to return to your correct position as soon as possible.
