Men’s Foursome Championships

Posted on: 15 July

The biggest field in many years teed up in horrible conditions on Saturday to contest the Club Foursomes Championships sponsored by John Golby at Blackwall Tyres Service & Mechanical Repairs. A strong wind was gusting from what felt like three different directions all day, contributing to a wind chill that had the “feels like” temperature below 5 degrees! The course itself was in fantastic condition and the greens could not have been better despite the wet weather of recent weeks, a credit to Chris and the Greens staff. Special mention to Andrew Friend who had the early setup job to make sure everything was ready for the last minute change to teeing off from the 10th. It was great to have the tough hole positions in play to really make it an event that was going to take real champions to succeed.

We did try to use the MiClub system to run the nett event, but it couldn’t properly handle the 27 hole format and the online nett scoring for the first 9 holes wasn’t correct. Fortunately Dick Paull rescued the day with his spreadsheet, after he and Bob Saunders had a huge morning working the BBQ to give everyone the opportunity for some hot food to warm them up.

The Club and A Grade Championship was taken out by defending champions Shayden Binder & Simon Trickett. Last year they went under par, this year their 10 over 112 (35, 77) for the 27 holes was enough for a two shot victory over Greg Beatty & Aaron Walters 114 (37,77) a further two shots to Kaine Andres & Russell Maclean 116 (37,79). Brendan James & Simon Hoyland were 4th with 117 (40,77) with Paul Botting & Trevor Walker rounding out the top 5 on 120 (40,80)

The B Grade Championship went to Trevor Cheetham and Denis Holland who had 138 (48,90) that gave them a two shot victory over Micky Law & Ray Laboyrie 140 (47, 93) who were one ahead of John Fleming & Jim Mcgrath 141 (49, 92) and Jeff Andrew & Dunstan Berenger 141 (43,98). Final spot in the top 5 went to Paul Bish & Peter Louis 142 (49,93).

The C Grade Championship was taken out by Mark Smith & Wayne Kidd on 139 (47,92) they had the largest winning margin of the day, 6 shots ahead of John Murphy & Steven Smith on 145 (53,92) who took second place on a countback from Robert Fraser & Richard Hyland 145 (48,97). Peter Batty and Aidan Cuddington were 4th with 146 47,99) and Brian Smyth & Bradley Nicholas were 5th with 148 (51,97)

Nett events were held in conjunction with the Championships, with the two prize winning teams in each Championship grade ineligible for the nett awards.

A Grade nett went to Simon Blake & Greg Mcfarlane 108.75, ahead of Kaine Andres & Russell Mclean on 111.50

B Grade nett went to Jeff Andrew & Dunstan Berenger 115.50, just ahead of Paul Bish & Peter Louis 115.75

C Grade nett went to Richard Hyland & Robert Fraser 111.25, ahead of Peter Shackleton & Garry Goodhand 112.50

NTP prizes to Trevor Cheetham on the 12th and Phillip Rees on the 17th. Ball comp was on the 18 hole nett and went down to 75.5 on a countback.

There wasn’t a best dressed award, and not sure Zac Wilkins & Brett Radford would have taken that prize as Brett let down the team by not having the same smooth hairstyle as Zac.

Thanks to Simon Blake at Sportscoast trophies for providing the awards for the Winners

As we had a room full of people for the presentation it was a great opportunity to present Shayden Binder with his trophy for winning the 2019 Wilsons Realty A grade matchplay Championship in a tight final match over Brendan James.

Next big event will be the Club Championships commencing on 12 October

Happy Golfing!
