Men’s Golf Update

Posted on: 7 March

Vale Kevin John Dawkings, who passed away on 24 February and whose life was celebrated on Friday 6 March. Dawko first joined our Club as an 11 year old in 1978, he became passionate about his golf and developed into a fine player. He represented the Club in Junior, A Grade & Masters (over 50s) Pennants as well as winning Matchplay & Foursome Club Championships. We have seen his seven year battle with cancer that never took away his spirit, and always had him back on the course whenever his health would allow. This Saturday our Encourage Shield Juniors, and next Sunday our Senior Men’s, Pennant teams will wear black ribbons on their caps in memory of Dawko and all that he contributed to the Club. Our deepest condolences to his wife Kelly & his children, to his father Lionel (who has been a golfing member since 1978), his mother, and all of his family & friends. As mentioned above, our Juniors are playing in the final round of the Encourage Shield, at Shelley Beach on Saturday at 12:30. A win will give them a good chance of becoming District Champions. If you are free in the afternoon, I am sure they would appreciate your support on the course.

In Senior Pennants it has been a season of ‘almosts’. A Grade especially started very well and then have had a run of just missing out, one win extra in those matches and they would be near the top of the table. B Grade are on a good run, undefeated in past 3 rounds, while C Grade had a great 4-0 win last Saturday. The final two rounds will be played 15 & 22 March.

The GT Cup, our 2 man Ambrose Championship, sponsored by Garry Turner, was scheduled to be played later this month. A decision has been taken to reschedule the event to Saturday 18 April. Part of the reasoning for that decision has been that our greens have been subject to attack by disease, Argentinian Stem Weevil and fungal infection. The long run of poor weather; very hot spells, heavy rain & high humidity gives the perfect environment for those problems to arise. Chris and the Greens staff have been working hard to keep the greens in the best possible state, and with the major renovations only two weeks away we can all look forward to the greens returning to peak condition in the run up to Championship season.

The greens are softer and that means pitch marks are more obvious. It also means that it is easy to see that many players are failing to repair the damage their balls are making when they land on the green. Please take the time to fix your pitch marks, or marks that have been left by players who do not respect the course in the way that they should. This also applies to repairing divots and raking bunkers. It is your course and if everyone treats it like their own, cares for it as much as possible, it will give you back the best possible golfing experience.
